Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology Fellowship

DermSurgery Associates in Partnership with Houston Methodist Hospital

The Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology Fellowship offered by DermSurgery Associates, in partnership with Houston Methodist Hospital, is a one-year ACGME- and American College of Mohs Surgery (ACMS)-accredited program. This fellowship provides intensive, hands-on training in Mohs micrographic surgery and advanced reconstructive techniques, preparing graduates to become leaders and contributors in the field long after their training is complete.

Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology Fellowship

Weekly Structure (Alternating)

Dr. Goldberg:

  • Mondays: Surgeries at Houston Methodist (Smith Tower)
  • Tues–Fri: Surgeries and Clinic at DermSurgery in Bellaire, TX
    • 10–15 Mohs cases daily
    • Afternoon follow-ups on Tues/Thurs
    • Thursday AM: Attend Baylor College of Medicine’s General Dermatology Grand Rounds

Dr. Kimyai-Asadi:

  • Mondays & Fridays: Surgery at the Brenham, TX satellite clinic
    • Cases often involve larger or more advanced tumors, ideal for reconstructive training
  • Tues–Wed: Mohs surgeries at the clinic in Bellaire and Thursdays at the Katy, TX clinic.
    • 12–16 cases per day with follow-ups integrated between procedures

Additional Responsibilities

  • Participation in the National ACMS Journal Club (monthly)
  • Shared responsibility for Houston Methodist Hospital dermatology consult call

RESEARCH

Fellows are expected to engage in several scholarly pursuits throughout the fellowship year. Previous fellows have completed work leading on average to several peer reviewed publications or book chapters. The faculty will do their best to support any interests the fellow may wish to pursue.

Our fellowship starts on July 1 each year and ends on June 30.

Application Deadline: July 31 of every year.

We request that applicants hold a license to practice medicine within the U.S. at the time of application.

FACULTY INFORMATION

Leonard H. Goldberg, MD, FRCP, FAAD

Dr. Goldberg, a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, is world-renowned in the field of Dermatologic surgery. He is a leader in the field of Mohs surgery and skin cancer and is both a recognized speaker and author of more than 325 publications. He was previously Chief of Dermatologic Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine and is a member of numerous professional societies and committees, including the American Academy of Dermatology, American College of Mohs Surgery, and American Society of Dermatologic Surgery. Dr. Goldberg is Chief of Dermatology at Houston Methodist Hospital and is a Professor of Clinical Medicine. Dr. Goldberg is a Fellowship Director for the American College of Mohs Surgery and he has trained over 40 fellows in his capacity as Fellowship program director.

Arash Kimyai-Asadi, MD, FAAD

Dr. Kimyai-Asadi, M.D. is a board-certified dermatologist who specializes in Mohs micrographic surgery for the treatment of skin cancer. During his 3 years as an undergraduate student at the Johns Hopkins University School of Arts and Science, he completed a triple major, graduating Phi Beta Kappa with Bachelors of Arts in Biology, Philosophy, and Psychology. He then attended medical school at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland. He received his dermatology training at the Ronald O. Perelman Department of Dermatology at New York University, where he served as a chief resident. Subsequently, he completed a Mohs Micrographic Surgery fellowship under the guidance of Dr. Leonard H. Goldberg. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles as well as book chapters in clinical and surgical dermatology. He is regularly invited to present his techniques and research findings at national and international meetings that focus on dermatologic and reconstructive surgery.
